Michael Findlay was born in Bradford, United Kingdom. He studied for his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at the University of Oxford between 2013 and 2017, completing his final year research project in the group of Professor Michael Willis. He then moved to the University of Manchester to study for his PhD, working under the supervision of Prof. Igor Larrosa, where his research focused on developing ruthenium-catalysed C–H activation methodologies and investigating their mechanistic aspects. After defending his doctoral thesis in December 2022, Michael joined the Noël Research Group at the University of Amsterdam in February 2023, where he is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher.
